A platform for the next president

I'm getting tired how all the politicians seem to dance around the fundamental issues and problems we are having. Everything seems so complicated, but really they can be simple. All we need is to put our resources into the things that are important to us and keep them out of the areas we don't support. We just need to do it. Here is my proposed platform:

  1. Move from a war mindset to a police mindset: End all overseas military deployments and reallocate our soldiers and military resources to to areas: a) Defending the US, b) Helping to start a multinational police force that would intervene around the world to prevent abuses of human rights of people in all countries
  2. Invest in our future: We need to invest in our future. The best ways to do that are to reallocate money formerly tied up in the military to three areas: a) Alternature Energy and Energy Efficiency, b) Public Education, c) Single-payer health care for all
  3. Return to the gold standard: Like war, our current banking system makes it very easy to siphon money from the poor and working class to the hands of a few elites. Returning to the gold standard reduces destructive booms and busts and makes sure we REALLY know what our money is worth.
  4. Increase immigration quotas: Especially for highly trained professionals. As we get more protectionist, we shoot ourselves in the foot. The concentration of talent and ideas keeps America strong and generates the great welfare for all over the long term.
  5. Abolish all covert operations: We need only listen to JFK's quote on the dangers of secrecy in goverment to understand the dangers it poses. A democracy cannot operate effectively if it does not know what is going on. Sharply limit executive privilege. The president is not our boss: we collectively are his boss.
  6. End all corporate subsidies: Of all types. They distort the market and create perverse incentives. Similarly, prosecute scofflaw corporations who abuse the right we have given them to operate.
  7. Replace the income tax with a carbon tax: This could generate similar tax resources but would be much more aligned with our need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and wasteful energy use.

Dire times require bold action. This is not the time to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic: we need to change direction NOW.
