Essays

This page provides links to a variety of essays on various topics not specifically related to democratic development. THey range from fully edited and polished down to first drafts. I will try to put a revision number to indicate how complete I think it is. Anything less than 1.0 is a first draft and not really meant for distribution. They are included in my website as a way to share ideas. Please contact me if any of them intrigue you. It would be good inspiration for me to tighten them up!

National service and AmeriCorps

Peter Frumkin and I wrote these essays while I was working as a Research Fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. The versions represented here are drafts.

Global Democracy

  • The Battle for the Globe's Future: an op-ed published in the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government Citizen on April 17, 2001. I was quoted by David Gergen in his regular editorial for US News and World Report on May 14, 2001, which I believe was on the basis of this article.

Citizen engagement and planning

  • I did some work with the Boston Foundation developing a systems thinking workshop that could be used as part of broad stakeholder visioning and planning process. The goal of the workshop was to encourage systems thinking and specifically to help identify "high leverage" civic change strategies for the greter Boston region. The workshop slides are also available.
  • I wrote a descriptive paper based on my experince with the Boston Foundation for the 2002 Alliance for Global Sustainability Conference, which received the "Best Student Paper" award.

Leadership

  • Much of the writing I have done on leadership was while a partner with the Meristem Group and is protected intellectual property. However, I have attached here some slides and handouts from a public workshop we did at the 2004 International Leadership Association conference. This was a 3 hour introduction to the concepts of adaptive leadership as applied to the real-life leadership challenges of the participants.
